Short Stories & Flash Fiction
Since I started creative writing I have been experimenting with shorter forms.
Here are a few of my Short Stories and Flash Fiction pieces that have been chosen for a variety of events.

'Not the marrying kind'
Longlisted for New Writers
Historical Flash Fiction Competition 2025
This short piece was inspired by a combination of two things: firstly I have always loved this photograph of my great aunt Iola and often tried to imagine what was going through her mind when she chose this outfit to be photographed. The second was my discovery of the story of Lilian Cownley (which you can read here), a narrative that helped shape the work that followed.

RTÉ - The Prompt
I submitted a 750-word short story to RTÉ's 'The Prompt' - a new eight-part series showcasing fresh writing,
curated by Ireland's leading literary voices.
The prompt I chose is 'Embarrassment',
set by Irish novelist, Caoilinn Hughes.

'Unravelling' was read by me, and discussed
by Caoilinn Hughes and the show's host Zoë Comyns
on Sunday June 22nd on RTÉ 1 at 7.30pm

'No words needed'
I had been playing with a short story idea that was set
on the towpath of the Grand Union Canal. I know this towpath really well and often wonder about the comings and goings of the people who live on the canal boats.

My story was chosen for MKLitFest's celebration of International Day of Friendship on Wednesday 30th July.

You can hear me read it on the link below:

'8 Hours and then some'
I entered this 500 word piece of Flash Fiction
to the MKLitFest writing competition:
'Dreams for Beltane, Celebrating May 1st'

I chose to celebrate
International Workers' Day
by taking a look at what the 8-hour day
means for most women.
