Schools

Inspire your students to believe they can fulfil their dreams:
this is the story of how I came to write Eagle Sister, my novel set in Kyrgyzstan
at the time of Genghis Khan and which tells the tale of the rise to power of
a young nomad shepherd girl.

Aimed at KS3 and KS4 students, the presentation includes interactive workshop elements,
fabulous personal photos from my research trips to Kyrgyzstan and opportunities for Q&A.
It runs for the length of a single period (55mins).
The students will come away with an understanding of the journey from initial idea
to becoming a published author.

I also have presentations suitable for adult audiences and am available for online events such as meet the author and historical fiction collaborations.

Feedback

"Sue Turbett’s talk was truly inspirational for our students.  Her descriptions of her travels in Central Asia, and how she had used real-experience to inform the development of her novel, ‘Eagle Sister’ demonstrated to students how truly good writing is often underpinned by careful research and investigation into your chosen subject. The integration of workshop style activities for our students was helpful in highlighting how they could also make use of their interests in history to inform their writing.  Following on from her visit we have asked students to take part in a competition whereby they develop their own piece of historical fiction, something which they are very excited to do.  We are looking forward to welcoming Sue back at some point in the future to work with our students again."

The students enjoyed learning about your research through your very visual presentation.

The students were engaged through the workshop and the exercises were relevant and interesting.

The students particularly enjoyed how you wove 'how to approach writing historical fiction'

into your presentation."
